Music is an interactive subject; exceptional results require students to experience and participate in music making. Music classes in Navan Grind School engage all abilities, are exam focused and aim to optimise grades, using hands on interactive teaching.

There are three core areas examined in Leaving Cert Music; Composition, Listening and Performance (including Music Technology). Comprehensive teaching and exam preparation for these disciplines is central to our classes. Extensive notes and sample answers are provided for each area of the exam. There is constant and consistent reference to the exam papers, marking schemes and chief examiners reports. Knowledge of the exam’s structure and the language of the exam papers are given substantial attention. Familiarity with these specifics is crucial to achieving high grades. Class tests and feedback are common practice and homework is given and corrected in each class to build confidence in composition.

Individual time is given to students preparing for their Practical exam, aiming to boost confidence and perfect performances. Students receive assistance in choosing suitable pieces and obtaining sheet music. Regular guidance is given on ways to improve elements of their performance. Unprepared tests (sight-reading/clapping) are practiced and examined in class.

Music technology is a popular choice for students but is not always offered in schools. Technology is comprehensively taught and full exam preparation is given to students. Technology is taught using free software that can be accessed at home. It is an excellent choice for exam.
