Is your child in 6th class and heading into 1st year in secondary school?

This is probably one of the most daunting educational transitions for both students and parents even more so if your child has dyslexia / anxiety or a suspected learning difficulty.

Drogheda Grinds Academy has in consultation with a number of secondary schools put together a program for 6th class students that will support and assist students in this transition at ‘Academy Camp’.

The weekly long ‘Summer Academy Camp’ has a comprehensive timetable of activities, talks and classes that will give your 6th class students a taste of what to expect as they walk through the doors of secondary school for the first time. From lockers, homework, detention, how to study, the timetable, how to manage all the books, copies, hardbacks and getting into the canteen first. The week long program with be a fun approach to coping with secondary school.

TALK TIME: Students that have just finished first year and TY students from local schools have offered to give 6th class students their insight and advice on getting through the first few weeks in our daily Talk Time sessions.

Weekly long program includes;

French for fun (1 hour daily) / Spanish for fun (1 hour) a flavour of Art / Maths / History / Geography / Science / English / PE / Business Challenge / Music / Technology. In total over 30 hours of fun learning activities centered around 1st year subjects.

The emphasis is on fun experiments for science, history content for 1st year, making volcanoes (Geography), set up a company (Business) What maths you need to know for 1st year. English – who is Shakespeare and what books you need to read. For Art each child gets to create impressionist favourite, movie time (during breaks – Harry Potter 1st) and what you need to know about computers / ipads all broken down into a daily timetable.

Daily Talk Time on social media, bullying, study skills, secondary school in general and how to cope / mindfulness.

Please note these classes are for students specifically with Dyslexia or a specific learning difficulty whether diagnosed or suspected. The classes are designed by professionals with years of experience working with students with Dyslexia.

Classes run from 10am – 4pm daily but students can be dropped off from 9am and be collected up to 5pm at DGA. There are very limited places on each week. Students should bring a packed lunch.

Classes are put together and given by qualified primary & secondary school teachers, experienced tutors.

Cost per week per student is €125 – Note this is exclusively for 6th class students going into 1st year
